Raymond S. Mathieson is a senior lecturer in geography in the facelties of science, arts, and economics, University of Sydney. His specialist teaching and research field is industrial geography and economics of the socialist economies - the USSR, Communist China, and Eastern Europe. He was formerly a civil servant in senior researcher at the London School of Economics.

Dr. Mathieson has published a number of books, including a definitive economic geography of the USSR. He has published extensively in professional journals on a diverse range of topics. Currently he is conducting research on technology transfer to the USSR from Western countries. The present book, Japan's Role in Soviet Economic Growth: Transfer of technology since 1965, is the first to appear.
